What is the difference between Bioidentical hormones and Synthetic or Non- Bioidentical hormones? This is a point of confusion for many medical providers and non-medical individuals alike. Bioidentical hormones share the same chemical structure as those naturally made by the human body. Synthetic or Non- bioidentical hormones are those that are manufactured with a different chemical structure to those that are naturally produced by the human body.
-
What are hormones and how do they work?Hormones are essential for life and health. They are chemical messengers, and they play an essential role in growth development, sexual function, reproduction, energy, mood, sleep-wake cycle. Our hormone levels decline with age, disease, or trauma. The result of this decline leads to both mental and physical deterioration. At Renewed Health, we specialize in restoring these essential hormones to prevent and treat the signs and symptoms of deterioration and aging.
-
What are the issues with synthetic hormones?Because synthetic hormones are different than the hormones produced naturally in our body, they can produce abnormal metabolites that can cause unwanted side effects of bleeding, mood swings, and bloating, and increase one’s risk of cancer. This is why a natural hormone functions as a lock and key in our body; it is a biologically identical hormone replacement.
-
How are bioidentical estrogen and progesterone produced?Bio-identical hormones are found in yams and soy. Once extracted from these vegetables, they are processed by a specialty compounding pharmacy into a tailor-made dose and form for a specific patient. These bioidentical hormones are received by our body as our own.
-
What is the “ideal age” to start Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy? No matter what age you are, if you suffer from a hormone imbalance, hormone replacement therapy may help. Most men and women start to feel a decline in hormone levels in their 30’s and 40’s. At Renewed Health, we individualize treatment programs to address your unique needs.
-
What is a compounding pharmacy and why don’t we use commercial pharmacies?Compounding pharmacies creates medications using custom doses, ingredients, and forms to best meet the needs of a patient; whereas commercial pharmacies produce drugs manufactured on a mass scale. No two patients are alike; therefore, some patients need the individualized customization of a compounding pharmacy.
-
Does Bioidentical hormone therapy really work?Yes, if it is done correctly and under the supervision of a trained provider experienced in hormone replacement therapy! Supported by research, bioidentical hormone therapy can improve your health, function, and overall quality of life that will produce life changing results.
-
Is Bioidentical hormone replacement safe?Yes, there are numerous evidence based randomized control trials that show the efficacy and safety of hormone replacement therapy. The risks, benefits, and potential side effects, however, will always be discussed for you to make an informed decision on your health.
-
Will Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy interact with my other prescribed medications?Because BHRT is optimizing levels of natural hormones in our body, we do not typically see any interactions with other medications. Studies show improvement in symptoms of depression, anxiety, diabetes, and cholesterol when hormones are restored at optimal levels. You may be able to decrease or discontinue other medications that you are prescribed.
-
When will I start to see a difference in my symptoms, or overall health?Typically, our patients see improvement in their symptoms anywhere from 2-12 weeks on treatment. However, this depends on the unique symptom presentation of each patient.
-
How long will I need to stay on BHRT for?Evidence suggests that hormone replacement therapy has shown to prevent and manage several signs and symptoms of the aging process including fatigue, insomnia, temperature dysregulation, low libido, visceral fat, loss of skin collagen, and protect against heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer disease, why would anyone want to be without it? In the unlikely event you want to stop BHRT, we will help you discontinue this safely.
-
Can I cancel at anytime? We require a 30-day written notice of program cancellation.

What is desiccated Thyroid Extract (DTE)?Desiccated Thyroid Hormone (DTE) is a bioidentical thyroid medication extracted from dried animal thyroid glands and is primarily used to treat patients with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or a thyroid that is not functioning properly. Many researchers believe that natural desiccated thyroid extract from pigs is the best and most effective choice as it is the most like human thyroid.
-
DTE VS Synthetic, what’s the difference?Desiccated Thyroid Hormone is a Bioidentical Thyroid medication that contains T3 and T4 hormones, whereas Levothyroxine, a synthetic manufactured hormone only contains T4. Some patients who were previously prescribed Levothyroxine and switch to natural desiccated thyroid medication report drastic changes.
-
What are the benefits of DTE?A malfunctioning thyroid will affect your metabolism, temperature, cerebral function, and energy levels. DTE increases metabolism and can lower cholesterol levels. It can protect against cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, fatigue, and weight gain.
-
Who should AVOID DTE?Because natural thyroid is bioidentical to our own thyroid hormone, any healthy adult can take this. However, anyone with a history of adrenal gland problems, or thyrotoxicosis, heart disease, coronary artery disease, or chest pains should avoid use.
-
What are the potential side effects?Side effects are rare but can occur. Sweating, palpitations, increased heart rate, and tremors or nervousness.
-
